THE LION'S PRIDE
|
The Lion's Pride is an original adaptation of the traditional Japanese kabuki dance Renjishi, a spectacular dance involving father and son mythical-lion (shishi) characters. The play starts with a master kabuki
actor teaching his son to dance and act. The son is a reluctant student
and makes many hilarious mistakes. It just so happens that the father and
son are, in reality, possessed by the spirits of shishi. According to myth,
shishi have a pain that can only be cured by drinking the dew of a peony
blossom. Butterflies are fond of peonies so the beasts pursue them whenever
they can. As butterflies appear and flutter around the kabuki actors,
the shishi spirits awaken and the actors are transformed into their shishi
forms. Dressed in elaborate kimono's and colorful floor-length wigs representing
the lion manes, father and son perform a frenzied dance in which both lion's
twirl their floor-length manes over and around their heads demonstrating their wild nature.

MEDEA BALI
|
Medea Bali employed the mesmerizing choral chanting techniques of Balinese Kecak to illuminate the terror and tragedy of the classic Greek myth of Medea.
Kecak, a spectacular dance performed around a nighttime bonfire, is one of the most remarkable theatrical forms seen in Bali. Based on traditional Balinese dance and chant, Kecak employs dozens of dancer/actors who accompany their rhythmic chanting with the beats of their palms hitting chests and thighs. Dancer/actors move in unison, creating a spectacular choreographic performance, with hands waving, shaking and gyrating in a dizzying tempo. Medea, the most notorious woman in Greek mythology will emerge against the rich vocal backdrop of the kecak chorus. Medea's struggle in a foreign and hostile culture, highlighted by the pulsating chorus, culminates in one of the most tragic acts of infanticide in Western drama.
